【课程目标】
本课程将从医疗、社会与文化三个面向来进行历史的探究,时空设定在十七世纪到十九世纪的欧洲,内容则涵盖身体、性/别、生育、疾病、死亡、宗教、医疗机制与社会演变等课题。这门课程除了能增长同学们专业的历史知识,与学术英文的阅读能力,同时也希望培养同学们开阔的世界观,对于文化意义上的「他者」(Others)有更深刻的理解,进而去思辨近现代欧洲文明中「自我」(self)与「自然」(nature)、「文化」(culture)、「社会」(society)乃至于生老病死之间的复杂关系。

【教学方式】
以教师的演讲为主,同学的讨论为辅。教师每周将从参考书目中选取适合的专书章节或论文,配合相关的图像数据来讲授,引导同学们阅读与思考问题。同学们则须事先预习,以参与课堂上的讨论,或于课后撰写心得。学期中至少有两次观赏视听资料(如DVD或录像带)的机会,作为课堂辅助教材。
【课程要求】
良好的学习态度与基本的学术英文阅读能力,乃本课程的两大要求。期中考、期末考各占学期总成绩30%,上课表现、讨论问答与出席率共占40%。
